In this essay I am going to talk about how the values of fairness and justice are applied to the story of “A modest proposal” by Jonathan Swift.
The point of this author in his essay is to confront the Irish society with the working and living conditions of the less fortunate of Ireland. This essay is wiring with satire and with what we call “black humor”. Most of the people who read this story didn’t really understand that it wasn’t literal so this lead to a lot of bad critics. The values of justice and fairness are not really applied to the story if we see the story in a way of critique, for example how can we see fairness if in the story the proposal of the author is that poor people to reduce overpopulation are almost obligated to sell their babies to people with a lot of money for them to eat their children, this wouldn’t be fair because fairness is basically treating people in a way who is right or reasonable and clearly selling a baby for people to eat it isn’t right and it is kind or morbid too, it isn’t fair because a baby can’t speak for himself and the proposal is only for a certain age of baby so it’s even more bad, but if we try to see the proposal of Jonathan swift in a different way and we try to see it in his way we can kind of understand how his idea work because by eating the babies the population would stop growing fast and eventually reduce because if we have in mind that people die everyday this would make population decrease, but certainly we don’t see his proposal in the way that he does and we don’t approve it because we know that eating babies isn’t normal and it isn’t the right way to decrease population and stop poverty, I think that Jonathan’s idea was to break the logic of the moral values of the audience, which I think he accomplish really well, and to mock about the English conservation party using satire, sarcasm and a really strong and not really approve humor, he basically wanted his essay to became something that people talk about. In my opinion the values of justice and fairness are not reflected in this story and I think that the point of Jonathan swift was exactly that, that those values weren’t reflected in his essay, he wanted his essay to be really far from what we know as moral values.
